Health Insurance in Spain for an American with diabetes?
I will be moving to Spain on a family visa soon. Because of the family visa, I will not be entitled to national health care (as I understand it). I will need to get my own health insurance. I have Type 1 diabetes. Does anyone know of any companies who could cover me? Or any other good suggestions? Thanks.

You need a lot of research to do… There must be health programs you can reach there… There also must be a medical institution….. You better find out before you go there!!!!

Are you SERIOUSLY planning on moving, even if you can’t get this straightened out?

Honestly! It’s a great country! But if you don’t get your ducks in a row, with something as serious as having your meds covered for Diabetes…you shouldn’t do it! Go for a month or two, see what you have to get done, and come home…get whatever you can (what is it? about three months supply normally?) and then go when you have such things planned.

START by checking with whomever covers your insurance now. See how long they will cover you there, or if you can continue coverage. I know that if you are traveling, and you have an emergency, your home insurance will cover you…not sure about chronic issues, if you can continue coverage or not…YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY WILL KNOW THAT, THOUGH.

It will depend on how long you are staying in Spain. There isn’t reciprocal health agreement between the States & Spain. If you have family here they could assist you in that. You may need to come here with holiday insurance from the States initially and then inquire when you get here.

healthplans.my-age.net - here is my health insurance plan. As I remember they can provide such a service.

If you are going to work in Spain ( and pay your taxes there )
you can use the national health care.
Ask to the embassy of your country in Spain.
