Where can I get good reasonable health insurance for diabetic grandchild. Has medicaid until Aug. 1?

My granddaughter is type 1 diabetic, brittle. Needs a pump. She is on Medicaid but they will not qualify after August 1 because her mom got married.

I cannot expect a new step father to cover her so I will pay for it. He has no health insurance at work. Need insurance especially for granddaughter but would like estimates for whole family of 4.

Depending on which state you live in, your best bet is to go through the state. In Illinois, we have a thing called Kids First. Depending on family size, etc they will give you different rates.

FYI, if her blood sugar is not under control, she’ll not be eligible for a pump. A pump isn’t a cure, it is for diabetes that is managed.

Try going onto Healthy Families.com. They offer insurance for kids at a discounted rate or free.
Also… I honestly feel that if there is a step father stepping into the picture he needs to take responsibility for his new family. In addition your a Awesome Grandma! But why isn’t mom doing anything about this???

Make sure her mom talks to someone at the medicaid office. In Missouri just because a person marries does not mean the children are cut off medicaid. Often they qualify for medicaid for children or only a portion of the step parent income is counted.
If they do not qualify for medicaid, I would suggest applying for Social Security Disability or SSI for the child. If she qualifies for one of these programs, she will qualify for medicaid.
A child that is a brittle diabetic faces more health related problems that a child that is a normal type 1 or type 2, so she may well qualify for disability. It’s worth looking into.
